Everyone has moments in life where they feel down. Sadness, hopelessness and loneliness are entirely natural human emotions and experiencing them is not, in and of itself, evidence of a mental health problem or disorder. What is anxiety? Anxiety is a emotion. It's a normal emotion we all experience while feeling ill at ease as we anticipate a future danger or other hardship.Anxiety may be a symptom of depression, it could be caused by the menopause, or it could be the result of stress. Whatever causes the feeling of anxiety, it can safely be treated with natural herbs. Some of the best therapies for anxiety are natural, and some can be found in your garden or in your health food store.

Gingko, an herb used mainly to treat circulatory disorders of the brain, can also work as an anti-depressant. This herb can be obtained in tablet form from any health food store.

Chamomile is known as a cure all by herbalists because of its healing properties. It is in the form of little daisy-like blossoms that can be used in a hot relaxing tea or as essential oils to be used in baths. Chamomile has been known to cause relaxation to helping one sleep.

Essential oils from natural herbs can be used in aromatherapy massage, they can be taken in the form of plant extracts in supplements, or drunk as infusions made from either dried or freshly picked herbs. Lavender, geranium, ylang-ylang, bergamot and Melissa are great for frazzled nerves. Then they are used together, they are especially beneficial. Whenever you feel anxious, use 50 drops of the above blend in a diffuser or aroma lamp. You may also add six drops to a hot path (stirring gently). The blend may also be used as massage oil by adding 10 drops to one ounce of almond or olive oil. Carriers can be found at your local health food store.

Lemon balm (Melissa Officinalis) can be used for alleviating sleep problems and insomnia. It can also help to reduce nervousness, and is a general restorative for the nervous system. It is not recommended for use during pregnancy. You should consult your doctor, or ask a pharmacist, before using lemon balm, if you are diabetic, alcohol dependent, or suffer from liver disease.

Peppermint, the easiest herb to grow, is very tasty used to make hot tea. If using dried, use one teaspoon per cup. Fresh leaves require one tablespoon. Steep either in one cup of boiling water for 5 minutes. Sweeten to taste with honey. The tea helps relieve a nervous headache or stomach ache caused by anxiety.

Eat lots of GABA enriched foods like, Bananas, Almonds and other nuts from trees, broccoli, brown rice, lentils, oats and whole grains and wheat's; rice bran, spinach, walnuts, beef liver and fish like Halibut. Prescription medications for anxiety and other disorders can actually prevent the production of GABA. These foods will boost it.

Fish Oil is helpful for anxiety when taken every day. It comes in capsule form, as well. It's best if you eat 3oz of fish a day to get your Omega-3 fatty acids naturally, though.

Exercise is a great way to relieve anxiety and stress, so get out there and do something that you really enjoy like Tennis, Running, Jogging, Baseball, Basketball, Touch Football, Volleyball, Golf, Biking or even simple walking. Walking your dog has been very helpful to many who suffer from anxiety. Not only will you physically feel better by following some of these tips, but also you'll be able to treat your anxiety problem and I believe that you will see a difference.
